Adult Movies

Whenever I'm in the library nowadays I'm usually in the kid's section looking at children's books and DVDs.

So my daughter was in this library program and my son was at his last day of daycare and I find myself standing in the middle of the wide open foyer thinking.

Unfortunately I tend to think out loud and say to myself, and the five or six other library patrons close enough to hear.

"Hmm. I wonder where they keep the adult movies."

I blushed and ran. :)

Tagged by Kim

I have been tagged by my critique partner Kim Daniel.... better do it, she's mean :)

4 things that should go into Room 101 and be removed from the face of the earth:

1. Mosquitoes

2. Hunger

3. People who hurt others

4. Greenhouse emissions

3 things people do that make you want to shake them violently:

1. Abuse kids

2. Drink and drive

3. Treat me like an idiot

2 things you find yourself moaning about:

1. Lack of money
2. The weather--well I am English :)

1 thing the above answers tell you about yourself:

I'm a poor, English, sanctimonious, tree hugging mom :)

I tag. Bailey, Rene, Brandy

Rockin' Chick Blogger

Ames nominated me LOL. How sweet is that?

I nominate...drum roll, please

Loreth--A very cool blogger
Suzanne--Infectious fun
Kim--A wonderful writer from Tennessee
Meretta--Totally rocks
Stacy~ When I grow up I want to be just like Stacy :)

Actually I would nominate a whole bunch of you guys, but then who'd you nominate?

I had a wicked day yesterday, but not in a good way. Did I recently, foolishly declare I was coping? Argh. Yesterday was the first day my goals kicked my butt. I had a blinding headache. The kids wanted me every second of the day or bickered every minute. My son discovered he could hold his sister underwater in the neighbor's pool, and is also obsessed with my boobs???

He finishes daycare today--then it is a month of the three of us stuck in the house during the day. Looks like my evenings are going to be long...maybe I'll try the early start instead and pray everyone isn't up at 5 am!

So that's why I'm not getting out to visit much. Priorities. Doesn't mean I don't love you guys :)

Tim and Faith Chasing Cars

Remember I said Tim and Faith performed this in Winnipeg. Well I found a version on Utube from a different concert. I thought I'd share. Whenever I listen to this song I hear Tim's twang.

Planning the vacation...

I'm planning our trip out west at the end of August, to Drumheller where we aim to meet up with the in-laws (Pop and granny).

Drumheller is in Southern Alberta and is the home of some big dinosaur bones. We're very excited.

Maybe my next hero will be an archaeologist?

What are you doing for your vacation? Is someone going to make me jealous?

The British Open Championship 2007

Padraig Harrington won the Open in a very exciting finish--if you like golf.

It was lovely to see an Irishman win, although to be frank I don't see much point in the game. I lived in St Andrews for more than a decade and only swung at a ball once and that was just to shut everyone up. I worked two Opens, selling overpriced sandwiches and drinks and I confess I sent many people on the ten minute walk up to Tescos to buy a much cheaper version of the same thing.

There is no doubt golf and the town are heavily linked--St. Andrews has something like eight medal courses within a mile of the town. And most of them aren't expensive to play if you live there because they are council owned.

I always wanted to hang my laundry out on the Old Course on the final day of the competition as was my right on common land :) If only I'd had a cow or a goat I could have really caused a stir :)

Somehow I doubt the duffers in the Royal and Ancient would have seen the humor in it. I'm not anti golf, I'm not even against places where men want to gather with their own gender and bond, but I am against such places if they allow the waitresses and barmaids to be female. That just smacks of old fashioned domination fantasies.

Anyone else into golf? BH is. And just a note, I love putting greens :)

A bit of class... Class!

I'm still on track, though the ironing hasn't been done and the fish tank needs cleaned and the whole house needs de-dog-haired. My one dog Finn is being a cantankerous old bitch. She ate a newly planted fir tree and chowed down on a houseplant right in front of me. DH thinks she's near death. I think she's a big fat con dog :)

She'll be 16 in September assuming she doesn't eat something poisonous in the meantime...

See this poster... Wouldn't you LOVE to go see SB at the theatre? I'm trying to remember the last time I went...Hmm... maybe a little production downtown last year. The last time I saw something big was Riverdance in Toronto and before that Les Mis in the West End...

I love a really good live performance. DH loves it too--he has a secret hankering for the stage which comes in useful during lectures.

And yes--of course he's better looking than Sean Bean :)

DH and I were thinking about where we'd have our beach house--you know when we're rich (note to self: must not forget to buy lottery ticket this week).

I was thinking the west coast of Scotland (see left for Isle of Harris), but DH pointed out there were less bugs on the west coast of Ireland (see below for Cliffs of Moher).

One thing that amused me greatly about the south of Ireland was the lack of safety precautions for tourists. I think they figure if you are dumb enough to get close to the edge of these cliffs on a windy day you deserve everything you get. They do put up stone slab barricades to protect the sheep though. Gotta appreciate their priorities.

My husband is Irish, my best friend is Irish. Ireland wouldn't be a bad place to retire...

I got everything done that I needed done today. My plan is working :)

If you could have a beach house anywhere, where would it be?

I'm back :)

and feeling better and more invigorated than ever :)

The reason? Simply setting more realistic goals.

The kids need me. The dogs need me. The house needs me. My husband occasionally needs me. And it is good to go out and about and do things other than stare at the computer screen pulling out hair and berating myself for being the biggest moron ever to walk the planet... I'm at the stage where everything I've written is trash. The story is hopeless, the writing infantile, the plot blah.

So--everything is right on course :) Twenty pages of editing every day and then I can do everything else that comes up, and possibly more editing later on if I get the chance. 20 pages a day--400 pages in 20 days.

I'm pretty sure DH and I had West Nile virus. We found 3 dead birds in the yard (woodpecker, cow bird, blue jay) within the space of 5 days and with our combined biology Ph.D.s completely failed to link it to the mosquitoes that take chunks out of you when you venture outside and the mysterious illness that knocked me out one weekend and DH the next. Thankfully we were better within a day. The children seem okay, fingers crossed. I'm a little worried about the neighbor's mother who is 94 and suffering congestive heart failure, but what can you do? It might not have been, but it seems all way too coincidental for it not to be.

Hope you're feeling hale and hearty :)

I know what I said, but I forgot I was blogging at Killer Passion today. I posted an excerpt of my wip. I'd love to know what you think because this feels like a departure to me, but maybe that is just because I'm so close to it?

Taking a Break...

Summer holidays are a killer. I'm exhausted :) Edited a chapter and a half this week. Hope to visit blogs tomorrow and email friends, but basically, if I'm not editing my wip, I'm going to be chasing the kids or gardening or lying flat-out knackered on the sofa.

Pass the chocolate...

Kathleen Woodiwiss has died.

Such a terrible shame. I loved her books.

On a different note the Kiss of Death cookbook has finally been published... link.

I have two short stories in there LOL. Both are on the gory side. I spent nearly two years on the publicity committee who worked incredibly hard on this project and they deserve much praise and thanks for all their hard work.

Last but not least for those RWA members NOT going to National this week, check out the blogging list here. Cool :) For those who are going, have a great time :)

Susie Cooper

This is Laura Linney. I really like her as an actress and she has an incredibly versatile face. One of the reasons I've used her as the visual cue for my current heroine.

I've spent the last week trying to get to know my heroine, Susie Cooper, better. I've written a whole first draft and she's only just opening up to me.

Have you ever met someone you like and whom you think holds a depth that will interest and surprise you? That's what I want Susie to be. Unfortunately, right now I've hidden her personality so deep I'm the only one who knows how lovable she really is. And I'm the only one who can fix it.

Today marks the start of writing the second draft, where I delve deeper, add more details, write fresh, see if I get over the emotions and the point of each scene.

I love editing, but to be honest this book is scaring me. I so want it to be that perfect vision and I know it won't be. How can it match the pure concept that crystallized inside my head before I pressed my clumsy human fingers to the keyboard?

Well it can't, but I will keep trying and keep working at it.

I am feeling incredibly cowardly right now.

Querying agents.

I'm frozen, unable to send those letters out the door.

It isn't exactly that I'm afraid of rejection. It's that I'm afraid of not getting accepted :/

Subtle difference. I could take small unintentionally demeaning comments from 99% of literary agents out there, as long as I could find that one good agent to click with.

Fear is a terrible thing. I don't feel it very often, except maybe driving at rush hour surrounded by Winnipeggers--oh, and on ladders. All the normal stuff people associate with fear, like swimming with sharks, finding snakes, deep sea diving, second childbirth, coming face to face with large hairy mammals, heading toward a cliff face in a helicopter flown by a very depressed man--well to be honest, that's pretty exhilarating.

For me the ultimate challenge is not facing danger, it is facing rejection.

I have a few queries still out, but time is ticking and I need to submit more...

Here we go again. If anyone has any magic anywhere I'd appreciate a quick chant or a couple of frogs eyes thrown my way :)

Happy 4th July

Happy Fourth of July to my American buddies :)

But aren't you sorry now? I mean I know you have Hollywood, but we have William and Harry :)

That's okay, you wanted independence and you haven't done too badly ruling yourselves. You've had the odd success here and there.

Happy Birthday to the US :)

PS. The Union Jack up there--that's mine :)

PPS. My parents' house (on the left) was built around around 1740-1750. Don't you think it is freaky their house is older than the United States of America?

Excellent news. Alan Johnston has been released in Gaza. In a world full of recent bad news, this is good news indeed.

The long weekend...

Well that was nice. 3 days of doing very little. Bike rides, dog walks, reading, doing the usual mom stuff. Thinking about my characters.

I did miss the party (par-tee) on Sunday due to a sudden headache and I'm not sure what that was all about.

Anyway, this week I will visit everyone to finally catch up :)

And check out Pam Champagne's Killer Passion contest for July (posted July 1st) to win a bag of goodies. Pam's books are excellent.

On a slightly weird note I was reading about the bomb attacks in the UK. They've arrested two doctors (?) and one works in Glasgow (near the inlaws) and the other works in my parents' local hospital in Shropshire. How strange is that?

I'm thankful no one else was hurt during the attacks. Goodness knows we've flown out of Glasgow often enough as have friends and family. We live in a unfathomable world at times--when people who have spent years training to save lives decide instead to take them.

Happy Canada Day and birthday

Guess who is 8 today?

Happy Birthday Benn, Rufus, Penny and the three other pups who left the Anderson clan.
